Conclusions:
Our results suggest that low infection rates can be obtained using prophylactic antibiotics and a 1.5 cm incision for the MammoSite catheter. High 3-year local control, disease-free, and overall survival rates and good to excellent cosmetic results were achieved in early-stage breast cancer patients treated with accelerated partial breast irradiation. Although the preliminary results are encouraging, longer follow up is necessary to ensure that accelerated partial breast irradiation yields results that are equivalent to standard whole breast irradiation.
